Kenya Red Cross trains 60 community members in Garissa on life-saving skills

At least 60 community members in Garissa town received first-aid training from the Kenya Red Cross aimed at saving lives during emergencies of floods disasters and road crashes.

Ummulkheir Ahmed, a humanitarian aid worker who was among those trained in first-aid skills, said the training was very necessary since it would help to save lives during emergencies.
"We have learnt how to respond and help casualties during accidents and occurrence of floods and other disasters," she said.
Lucia Sila, a trader in Garissa equally appreciated the first-aid skills that she learnt during the training.
"As a first-aider I have to check a person's breathing as I look for chest movement, listen for breath sounds, do the necessary help before calling for emergency," she said.
She urged the Kenya Red Cross to train more people to help in life-saving during emergencies.

Francis Kalama, a trainer from the Kenya Red Cross stated that many lives were lost during disasters due to lack of first-aid skills by those handling them.
"The casualties are mishandled and they succumb to injuries before arrival to the hospital. This training will help to save lives if the trained first-aiders apply the acquired skills during response to accidents and other emergencies," he said.
Daud Ahmed the Garissa Branch Kenya Red Cross Coordinator confirmed that the first-aiders were selected from various members of different sectors within Garissa town.
"Disasters such as fire outbreaks, floods and road crashes are frequent. We have decided to train many actors within the communities in Garissa town," he said.
He stated the Kenya Red Cross was undertaking one-week community engagement activities in Garissa including Iftar for orphanage centres, and a Ramadhan football match between Musalaba FC of Garissa and North Eastern Polytechnic Training College to mark 60 years of services to humanity.
